Prevent fires, protect residents and staff, and respond safely when a fire occurs.

Before You Start

  • Know alarm locations, exits, and evacuation routes.
  • Identify fire doors, extinguishers, and evacuation equipment.
  • Understand the facility’s fire response procedures.

Steps

RACE — Fire Response

  1. R — Rescue: Remove people from immediate danger if safe.
  2. A — Alarm: Activate the fire alarm and notify emergency responders.
  3. C — Contain: Close doors to limit fire and smoke spread.
  4. E — Extinguish/Evacuate: Use an extinguisher only if trained and safe; otherwise evacuate according to the plan.

PASS — Fire Extinguisher

  1. P — Pull the pin.
  2. A — Aim at the base of the fire.
  3. S — Squeeze the handle.
  4. S — Sweep side to side.

Safety & Observations

  • Never use elevators during a fire unless specifically directed under an approved evacuation procedure.
  • Keep fire doors and exits unobstructed.
  • Avoid smoke-filled areas.
  • Do not attempt to fight large or spreading fires.
  • Use extinguishers only when trained, with a safe escape route.

What Should I Remember?

  • RACE = Response.
  • PASS = Extinguisher.
  • Report frayed cords, damaged outlets, and fire hazards.
  • Keep electrical equipment away from water and heat.
